Twitterrific 3.0.1 ads cause eye bleed

After updating to Leopard and reinstalling all my software again, I was disappointed to find out that the new version of Twitterrific (3.0.1) now contains huge advertisements within the Twitter feed. I’m not against advertising when its small and doesn’t hinder the experience of the software, but the advertising in Twitterrific makes my eyes bleed. Surely the same result could be achieved by thinner ads, or make them look more like twitter updates.

Anyway, I rummaged through my downloads folder and managed to find the previous version of Twitterrific (2.1). I have uploaded it here if anyone wants to grab it. Functionally it is exactly the same, minus a few options in the preferences window. There are a lot more functionality in the new version, but if you are like me and use Twitterrific to keep in touch with your Twitter activity, you won’t need these options anyway!

I am by no means trying to stop people downloading the new version, just providing a link to the older version for those interested.

  1. Hey there,

Sorry you feel so strongly that the ads in Twitterrific “make your eyes bleed”, but their size and appearance is set by ads seen and run on The Deck. The ads are standardized across the entire network and therefore out of our control. I personally think Deck ads are some of the most pleasing anywhere.

Functionality wise, there is a huge difference between Twitterrific 2.1 and 3.0.1. Visit the Twitterrific version history page to get a complete list.

    Hope this helps.

  2. Ged,
Fair enough there are a lot more features – none of which I use. And I guess I’m posting the blog for the people who are in the same boat as me.

As for the ads, I just feel that they are too large, and having used the software for a long time now – needing to put up with ads just annoys me and ruins the ‘Twitterrific experience’. That is just my opinion. :-)

I’m sure if I was a new Twitterrific user, I wouldn’t care about the ads.

I love the software and the design of it – its a great app. I just think the ads are a bit large; but I realize The IconFactory needs to get revenue for their hard work on Twitterrific.

I would purchase the new version to get rid of the ads if I wanted the functionality it provides. Unfortunately, I can’t justify $15 just to get rid of ads.

  3. Naturally advertisers like it when your product has more users viewing ads rather than paying to not view ads. I’d be discouraging peopple from using the ad free version too. I guess you gotta draw the line somewhere though. ;)
